Description

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an onsite Adult Services Library Associate. This individual is responsible for providing excellent public service and outreach to over 40,000 residents, including reference and technology assistance, readers' advisory, and programming for adult patrons of all ages. This position includes ample opportunity to attend exciting continuing education and community events. The salary for this position ranges between $17.00 and $19.57 per hour, depending on qualifications and equity in the organization.

Schedule: This position includes most daytime hours, including morning and afternoon shifts, with evenings as needed and weekends on a rotating basis.

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, the Library Associate provides reference, readers' advisory, technology assistance, and programming for patrons of all ages. The Adult Services Manager will assign specific responsibilities/functions based on experience, skills, and the department's specific needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Answers reference questions and provides basic reader's advisory in person, by telephone, or by email in a prompt, courteous, and confidential manner.
  • Plans and implements library-sponsored programs for patrons aged 18 years and older, including lectures, performances, book discussions, special events, and reading programs.
  • Prepares and merchandises engaging and trending department displays and creates bibliographies.
  • Ensures all patron policies and procedures of the McHenry Public Library District are followed.
  • Assists in selecting, evaluating, and maintaining materials for assigned areas of the adult collections in various formats.
  • Keeps current with print and online reference and reader advisory resources to answer patron questions competently.
  • Participates in professional development and networking activities both in person and online.
  • Participate in library-sponsored outreach opportunities.
  • Serves on library committees or community organizations that align with the library's mission.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Additional Duties:
  • May communicate and cooperate with assisted living facilities, local community organizations that serve the adult community, institutions of higher education, and local businesses.
  • May maintain library website and social networking sites.
  • Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree, LTA or equivalent course work/ and previous library experience; Bachelor's degree desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, eReaders/tablets, online video conferencing/sharing platforms, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of popular materials for adults.
  • Understanding of the recreational and educational needs of today's adult community.
  • Ability to complete detailed work accurately, efficiently, and on time with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments independently or as a team.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish, Polish, or American Sign Language) are desirable.

Working Conditions:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach with hands and arms, get down on floors, climb stools, and perform other physical tasks.
  • Repeated movements with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while using a keyboard.
  • Employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time of work, including possible extreme hot and cold weather.
  • Noise level is generally similar to an office environment but may be loud at times.
  • The employee will occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds and push or pulls carts up to 100 pounds.
